Bario
The oldest longhouse in the Kelabit Highlands, and the one the surrounding villages were resettled away from in the 1960s. All timber, somewhere north of twenty doors, and people living behind every one of them. It runs in three parts. Kitchens with open hearths along one side, bedrooms and private living space in the middle, and a long common hall used for weddings and gatherings, with family photographs going back generations down the walls. You can walk the whole length of it, past people cooking and talking, because that is how a longhouse works.
It is one of the most authentic stays in Bario.
