Bukit Mertajam · Seberang Perai
The Tua Pek Kong temple on Jalan Pasar, standing since 1886 and the anchor of Chinese Bukit Mertajam ever since. The name means the forecourt of Pek Kong, and the forecourt is the point. The food court outside it is as much of a landmark as the temple, with a koay chiap stall over a century old, white wanton mee, and char koay teow fried with duck egg. The temple was rebuilt after a fire and restored again in 2023, which cleaned it up considerably. Not everyone thinks that was an improvement.
