Minor Basilica of St. Anne

French missionary put a chapel on this hill in 1846, for Chinese and Indian Catholic migrants working the farms below. The church that replaced it went up in 1888 and still stands as the Shrine of Harmony, with the priest who built it buried in the main aisle. He died on the feast of St Anne. Rome granted basilica status in 2019, though the proclamation waited out the pandemic until January 2023, which makes this the only minor basilica in Malaysia. Every July the feast brings well over a hundred thousand pilgrims to Bukit Mertajam over ten days, and a good number of them are not Catholic.
